Making an all-out effort, Ken Reitz beat the throw to first base to prevent a double play in the ninth inning as Tony Scott scored to give the Cardinals a 2-1 victory over the Cubs. Steve Ontiveros homered for the Cubs' run in the fifth. The Cards tied it in the eighth when Dave Rader singled and Lou Brock tripled.

In the ninth, Scott singled with one out and went to third on a single by Ted Simmons. After an intentional pass to Keith Hernandez, Reitz grounded to Manny Trillo, who tagged second to force Hernandez, but his throw to first was too late to double up Reitz. [The Sporting News]
