Dennis Leonard yielded only two hits in a duel with Frank Tanana and pitched the Royals to a 3-1 victory over the Angels. Tony Solaita singled in the second inning for the Angels' first hit and Rusty Torres homered in the sixth for their second hit and only run.

The Royals came to Leonard's rescue with two runs in the eighth. John Mayberry singled and gave way to pinch-runner Dave Nelson, who scored on a triple by Amos Otis. Buck Martinez followed with a double for the go-ahead run. Hal McRae iced the decision with a homer in the ninth. [The Sporting News]
