An error and a passed ball enabled the Dodgers to rally for two runs in the ninth inning to the defeat the Pirates, 3-2. Ed Ott and Bill Robinson homered for the Pirates, while Steve Garvey had a round-tripper in the seventh to account for the Dodgers' first run.

With one out in the Dodgers' ninth, Boog Powell hit a pinch-single and yielded the paths to John Hale. Ed Goodson was safe on an error by Frank Taveras, who fumbled a potential double-play grounder. Lee Lacy singled, scoring Hale and sending pinch-runner Johnny Oates to third. Pirates' catcher Ott then let a pitch by Rich Gossage get past him with Bill Russell at bat and Oates scored the winning run. [The Sporting News]
