Sparked by Willie Randolph, who hit a homer with a man on base, the Yankees went ahead with four runs in the fifth inning and defeated the Twins, 6-5. After Randolph's rap put the Yankees in front, 4-3, a single by Chris Chambliss, pass to Carlos May and singles by Graig Nettles and Paul Blair added two more tallies. The Twins chased Catfish Hunter in the sixth, scoring on a double by Roy Smalley and single by Rod Carew, who had three hits in four trips, but Sparky Lyle relieved and recorded his 13th save.
