After striking out in his first two tries against Nolan Ryan, Tim Corcoran tagged the Angels' fireballer for a three-run homer in the eighth inning to power the Tigers to a 9-6 victory. Corcoran came into the game in the second inning after Steve Kemp was hit on the right forearm by a Ryan fast ball. Bobby Bonds homered with a man on base for the Angels in the third.

With the score tied, 6-6, Ron LeFlore reached second with one out on an error by Jerry Remy. Ryan struck out Tito Fuentes and then decided to pass Rust yStaub intentionally to get at Corcoran in a move that backfired on the Angels' ace.
