John Stearns hit the first grand slam of his major league career to cap a five-run outburst in the fifth inning and power the Mets to a 6-4 victory over the Expos. Tom Seaver, with help from Skip Lockwood, gained his first victory since April 30, It was also was his first triumph in Montreal since October 3, 1972, after six previous tries that included three losses and three games without a decision.

Seaver walked to open the fifth and was forced by Lenny Randle. Felix Millan and Dave Kingman followed with singles, driving in Randle. Ed Kranepool then walked to load the bases, setting the stage for Stearns' jackpot wallop. [The Sporting News]
