The Mets welcomed Joe Torre as their new manager, succeeding Joe Frazier, by defeating the Expos, 6-2, to snap a six-game losing streak. The Expos counted their pair in the first inning on a single by Chris Speier, triple by Gary Carter and single by Tony Perez.

John Milner batted in the tying tallies in the third and the Mets then went ahead to stay in the fourth when Ed Kranepool doubled and Jerry Grote singled. Milner accounted for his third RBI of the game with a single in the seventh scoring Lenny Randle, who had reached base with a double. [The Sporting News]
