After Barry Foote hit a homer in the eighth inning to tie the score, the Expos went on to beat the Cubs, 5-4, with a run in the 15th on a double by Chris Speier and pinch-single by Jerry Morales. Rick Reuschel, who started on the mound for the Cubs, hit his first homer of the season and second of his six-year major league career to account for two runs in the fourth, putting the Cubs ahead, 4-1. Tony Perez batted in an Expos' run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth and another with a single in the seventh, driving in Dave Cash both times, before Foote hit his score-tying homer.
