John Denny was tagged for 10 hits and five runs in five innings before being lifted for a pinch-hitter but received credit for his sixth straight victory when the Cardinals defeated the Giants, 8-5. Bake McBride hit a two-run homer for the Cards in the first.

John Montefusco homered in the fourth to put the Giants ahead, 4-3, but was knocked out when the Cards came back with three runs in their half. Denny accounted for two RBIs with a single. Terry Whitfield homered for the Giants in the fifth. The Cards retaliated with two runs in their half to clinch the decision. [The Sporting News]
