The Phillies, who had lost to Randy Jones seven straight times since June 1975, ended his mastery and defeated the Padres, 5-2. Bob Davis hit his first major league homer for the Padres in the third inning, but the Phillies bounced back with three runs in their half on a pass to Mike Schmidt, a stolen base, doubles by Greg Luzinski and Davey Johnson and a single by Jerry Martin.

Singles by Ted Sizemore and Larry Bowa around a sacrifice by Steve Carlton added a tally in the fourth. Martin capped the Phils' scoring with a homer in the seventh. Carlton struck out 11 in gaining his fifth victory in a row. [The Sporting News]
