The Braves made things closer but still went down to their 15th and 16th consecutive defeats in a twi-night doubleheader with the Pirates, who posted 3-0 and 2-1 victories to extend their winning streak to 10 games. Jim Rooker, who pitched 6 2/3 innings, and Kent Tekulve, who finished, combined to shut out the Braves in the opener. Frank Taveras and Phil Garner had three hits each for the Pirates and drove in a run apiece.

In the nightcap, Dave Parker, who extended his batting streak to 21 games, knocked in both Pirate runs with a triple in the third inning. Al Oliver was right behind Parker with a 15-game streak. [The Sporting News]
