The Pirates erupted for five runs in the fifth inning, two scoring on a single by John Candelaria, who helped himself to a 6-3 victory over the Reds. Dave Parker, who had three hits in five trips, including a single during the big inning, batted safely in his 17th straight game. Pete Rose, who stretched his hitting streak to 19 games for the Reds, led off in the seventh with a single, resulting in the exit of Candelaria. Rich Gossage gave up one hit the rest of the way.
