After giving up a three-run homer by Ted Simmons in the first inning, Steve Carlton blanked the Cardinals the rest of the way and pitched the Phillies to a 6-3 victory. The Phillies tied the score in the fifth with successive homers by Garry Maddox and Larry Bowa, a single by Mike Schmidt and double by Greg Luzinski. A walk to Tim McCarver, triple by Fred Andrews and double by Maddox made it 5-3 in the sixth and the final run counted in the seventh on singles by Schmidt, Luzinski and Bobby Tolan.
