The Royals scored six unearned runs and defeated the Mariners, 8-6, as Dennis Leonard, a winner of 17 games last season, chalked up his first victory of the season in his third appearance. Four of the Mariners' tallies also were tainted. Hal McRae and Fred Patek each drove in a pair with a double in the fifth inning when the Royals scored five unearned runs off Stan Thomas.
