Gary Carter became the first player in Expos' history to hit three homers in one game, but the catcher's blows failed to prevent an 8-6 loss to the Pirates. Carter hit solo swats in the second and fifth innings and then capped his slugging show with a two-run smash in the seventh, all three homers coming off Jim Rooker.

Tony Perez accounted for the Expos' two other runs with a round-tripper in the eighth. The Pirates' attack included homers by Phil Garner and Dave Parker, each with a man on base. [The Sporting News]
