Jose Morales set two major league records for pinch-hitters when the Expos' clutch batter came up in the seventh inning and drove in three runs with a double to defeat the Cubs, 4-3. The pinch-hit was Morales' 25th of the season, breaking the record of 24 by Dave Philley with the Orioles in 1961 and Vic Davalillo with the Cardinals in 1970. The time at bat as a pinch-hitter was his 74th, one more than Davalillo's mark with the Cards in '70.

Tim Foli led off the seventh with a double. After advancing on an infield out, Foli escaped a rundown on a grounder by Gary Carter and returned safe to third while Carter reached second on the play. The Cubs then passed Andre Dawson intentionally before Morales batted for reliever Steve Dunning and rapped his double. As a consequence, Larry Landreth, who pitched shutout ball over the first six innings and left with a 1-0 lead, was able to get credit for the victory in his major league debut.
