Frank Riccelli gained his first major league victory at the expense of Randy Jones when the Giants defeated the Padres, 2-1. Jones, the Padres' 21-game winner who absorbed his 13th loss, gave up the Giants' first run on a homer by Bobby Murcer in the fourth inning. The Padres knotted the count in the fifth and the tie persisted until the eighth when Larry Herndon batted for Riccelli and beat out a bunt on a disputed play.
