The Phillies, winning for only the third time in the last 16 games, clung to their precarious four-length lead over the Pirates in the East Division race by defeating the Cubs, 8-0. Larry Christenson and Tug McGraw combined to pitch the shutout.

Johnny Oates hit a double and single, scoring two runs and driving in two. Garry Maddox also accounted for two RBIs with a single in the eighth inning when the Phillies wrapped up the victory with four runs to complete their biggest scoring outburst since August 24 when they beat the Braves, 14-3.
