The Pirates extended their winning streak to nine games by sweeping over the Expos in a twi-night doubleheader, 9-7 and 7-2. After the twin-bill was over, Karl Kuehl was fired as manager of the Expos. Charlie Fox was named interim pilot. In the opener, Dave Parker drove in three of the Pirates' runs with a single and homer, while Willie Stargell and Riche Hebner accounted for two RBIs apiece. Tim Foli batted in three runs for the Expos, including two with a homer.

In the nightcap, Hebner hit for the circuit with a man on base in the sixth inning to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead, but Bombo Rivera tied the score with a triple in the Expos' half. The Pirates went ahead to stay in the seventh when Frank Taveras walked, advanced on an infield out and scored on a double by Richie Zisk. [The Sporting News]
