The Phillies took advantage of two throwing errors by Jerry Royster and one by Darrel Chaney to score three unearned runs and defeat the Braves, 4-1. With the score tied, 1-1, Garry Maddox doubled with one out in the fifth. Mike Schmidt grounded to Royster, who made a bad throw to second attempting to catch Maddox off base.

Greg Luzinski then forced Maddox at third, but Royster again threw wildly trying to complete the double play, Schmidt scoring. Jay Johnstone and Tommy Hutton followed with singles to drive in Luzinski. The Phillies added a third unearned run in the sixth. Tony Taylor singled, advanced on a groundout by Dave Cash and scored when Chaney threw the ball away on a grounder by Maddox. [The Sporting News]
