Intending to sacrifice, Bobby Murcer laid down a bunt that rolled through the infield for a double to help the Giants defeat the Cubs, 2-1. The game was scoreless until the ninth inning when Joe Wallis homered off John Montefusco for the Cubs' run.

Marty Perez and Gary Matthews opened the Giants' half with singles. Murcer followed with his bunt double through the Cubs' moving infield, scoring Perez, After an intentional pass to Darrell Evans, Ken Reitz fouled out, but Chris Speier hit a sacrifice fly and Matthews came home with the Giants' winning run.
