Mike Schmidt, who ended April with 11 homers, opened May with his 12th of the season as the Phillies swept over the Braves in a twi-night doubleheader, 3-0 and 4-2. After the Phils had picked up a run on three singles in the fourth inning of the opener, Schmidt hit for the circuit in the fifth. The Phils' final run in the eighth was unearned.

The Braves, who were shut out for the third time in succession, finally broke their 35-inning scoreless streak in the nightcap when Earl Williams homered with a man on base in the sixth. But it was too little and too late. By that time, the Phillies already had scored three runs, getting one in the third on a pass to Terry Harmon, a sacrifice and single by Dave Cash. Tim McCarver and Harmon each hit run-scoring singles in the fourth before the Phillies wrapped up their sweep with a homer by Jay Johnstone in the ninth. [The Sporting News]
