The Royals were deprived of what could have been their winning run on an appeal play in the eighth inning and then lost to the Yankees in the 11th, 9-8. In the eighth, Jim Wohlford singled and George Brett walked. John Mayberry then singled, apparently scoring Wohlford, but the runner failed to tag third en route to the plate and was called out when the Yankees appealed. In the 11th, Roy White singled, Thurman Munson was hit by a pitch and Chris Chambliss singled for the Yankees' winning run. [The Sporting News]
