A homer by Buck Martinez and two sacrifice flies carried the Royals to a 3-2 victory over the Yankees and handed Catfish Hunter his third defeat in four decisions this season. Two singles, a bunt and sacrifice fly by Jim Wohlford produced the Royals' initial tally in the third.

After Martinez homered in the sixth, the Royals loaded the bases and counted what proved to be their winning run on a fly by Hal McRae. Chris Chambliss and Lou Piniella hit homers for the Yankees, who played their first night game in rebuilt Yankee Stadium. [The Sporting News]
