With the Phillies leading, 5-1, Gene Garber gave up a single by Tom Paciorek to open the ninth and passed Cito Gaston and Rowland Office to load the bases. Tug McGraw relieved and his control was worse.

Rod Gilbreath walked to force in one run and Vic Correll doubled to drive in two men. After Darrell Evans popped up, Ken Henderson was passed intentionally, but Lee Lacy also walked to force in the tying tally.
