The Yankees rallied for five runs in the ninth inning to beat the Brewers, 9-7. Mickey Rivers began the frame with an infield hit off Jerry Augustine. Tom Murphy relieved Augustine and struck out Roy White. But Thurman Munson got an infield single and Chris Chambliss then doubled home two runs to tie the game and Lou Piniella followed with a triple to plate the go-ahead tally.

Piniella came home on Rick Dempsey's infield single. The final marker scored on Willie Randolph's sacrifice fly. Don Money hit an apparent bases-loaded homer in the bottom of the frame to seemingly win the game for the Brewers but the hit was nullified when first base umpire Jim McKean ruled time had been called before the pitch was made.
