After the Cubs scored twice in the ninth to win the opener, 6-5, the Pirates bounced back with seven doubles and a two-run homer by Richie Zisk to salvage a twin-bill split with a 9-1 victory. Jerry Morales and Jose Cardenal each doubled home a run in the final frame of the first game after Pittsburgh had tallied three in the top of the inning to take a 5-4 lead, getting two runs on Bob Robertson's pinch-single.

In the second game, Jim Rooker stopped the Cubs on two hits, retiring the last 16 Chicago batters in order. Zisk homered in a three-run fourth. Dave Parker collected three doubles in the game and drove in two runs. [The Sporting News]
