Working with only two days of rest, Catfish Hunter gained his 22nd win of the season, pitching seven innings as the Yankees defeated the Indians, 6-2. Hunter's departure broke his string of 10 consecutive complete games. Roy White got the Yankee scoring started with a homer in the third inning. After Thurman Munson was safe on an error, a double by Graig Nettles and single by Rick Dempsey netted two more runs.

Hunter gave up back-to-back homers by Boog Powell and Rico Carty in the fourth, but then retired the last 12 batters before leaving the game. The Yankees added their other runs in the seventh, two scoring on a double by Sandy Alomar. [The Sporting News]
