The Indians scored four unearned runs in the first inning and went on to hand the Royals a 9-5 defeat. Rico Carty's solo homer in the seventh gave the Indians a 7-5 edge after George Hendrick's run-scoring double fueled the big first inning.

Errors by Cookie Rojas and George Brett in the first and a passed ball by Buck Martinez in the fourth contributed to the Indians' scoring. Fritz Peterson lasted only five innings but earned the win with relief from Jim Bibby. [The Sporting News]
