The Yankees scored more than enough runs to win the first game of a doubleheader, 12-1, but then failed to score enough and lost the second game to the Indians, 3-2. In the opener, the Yankees enjoyed their biggest single-inning spree of the season, pushing across seven runs in the fifth on six hits, two walks and a pair of hit batsmen.

The Yankees' five-game winning streak, the last two coming under new manager Billy Martin, was snapped in the nightcap. Larry Gura, pitching with a 2-1 lead, was removed in the eighth inning after yielding a single by George Hendrick. Rico Carty, who had previously hit two doubles and a single, greeted the arrival of Dick Tidrow in relief with a homer to win the game for the Indians. [The Sporting News]
