A homer by George Foster in the fifth inning was enough to give the Reds a 1-0 victory over the Dodgers and pin defeat on Andy Messersmith. The Dodgers' starter yielded only one other hit in eight innings on the mound. Mike Marshall gave up two more in the ninth. The Dodgers collected seven hits off Tom Carroll and forced his exit with one out in the seventh, but Clay Carroll pitched hitless relief for the rest of the game. [The Sporting News]
