The Yankees, who had been shut out for 27 consecutive innings in three previous games, broke their scoring drouth and defeated the Tigers, 4-2. Thurman Munson, celebrating the birth of a son, batted in two runs, accounting for the initial marker with an infield out in the first inning after a walk to Bobby Bonds and error by Jack Pierce.

A single by Bonds, sacrifice by Rich Coggins, single by Munson, double by Graig Nettles and single by Lou Piniella produced three more runs in the fifth before the Tigers got on the board with a double by Ben Oglivie and homer by Willie Horton in the sixth. [The Sporting News]
