Pitching coach Marv Grissom said, "Maybe it's home cooking," to account for the Cubs' success in sweeping a doubleheader with the Pirates, 6-1 and 2-1, on the club's return to Wrigley Field after a long road trip. The second game went 11 innings before Jose Cardenal won it with a bases-loaded single. Steve Stone pitched a five-hitter in the opener and also batted in two runs with a single.

In the second game, Andre Thornton tripled with one out in the 11th. Jerry Reuss then issued intentional passes to Steve Swisher and Manny Trillo, loading the bases with the hope of setting up a double play, but Cardenal wrecked the strategy with his single. [The Sporting News]
