A single by Claudell Washington and doubles by Joe Rudi and Reggie Jackson produced the tie-breaking runs in the eighth inning to give the Athletics a 7-5 victory over the Tigers. The A's got off to a 3-0 lead in the first on a double by Bert Campaneris, triple by Washington and homer by Jackson before adding two unearned runs in the fifth.

The Tigers came back against Ken Holtzman in their half of the fifth with three runs on a single by Leon Roberts, double by John Wockenfuss and homer by Aurelio Rodriguez. Dan Meyer then tripled and Willie Horton homered to tie the score in the sixth. [The Sporting News]
