Posting his fourth shutout of the season, Andy Messersmith allowed only four hits while pitching the Dodgers to a 4-0 victory over the Expos. The crowd of 22,701 boosted the Dodgers' attendance to 1,004,550 for 27 home games, marking the earliest date that any club had passed the million mark.

The Dodgers staked Messersmith to a two-run lead in the first inning on a walk, triple by Steve Garvey and single by Ron Cey. Steve Yeager singled and Rick Auerbach doubled for another run in the fourth before Jim Wynn added the final tally with a homer in the fifth. [The Sporting News]
