Although Rod Carew smashed two homers and a single for his fifth straight three-hit game, the Twins were no match for Catfish Hunter and lost to the Yankees, 7-4. Carew drove in all four of the Twins' runs.

The Yankees counted twice in the first inning. Roy White walked, went to third on a wild pickoff throw by Jim Hughes and stole home before Thurman Munson added the other run with a homer. Bobby Bonds knocked in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the fourth. Chris Chambliss singled and Graig Nettles homered to break a 4-4 tie in the seventh.
