Al Cowens, who went into the game batting only .156, collected three hits in three official trips and John Mayberry accounted for three hits in four at-bats to pace the Royals to a 5-2 victory over the Indians. The Indians garnered only six hits off Dennis Leonard, but held a 2-1 lead before the Royals decided the outcome with three runs in the sixth inning.

Jim Wohlford led off with a double and scored on a single by Mayberry. With two out, Fran Healy singled and George Brett walked to load the bases for Cowens, who came through with a single, driving in two runs to put the Royals ahead.
