The Cardinals scored two runs in the eighth to edge the Dodgers, 4-3. With one out, Dodger reliever Charlie Hough walked pinch-hitter Ron Fairly and Lou Brock. Ted Sizemore singled in Mike Tyson, pinch-running for Fairly, and Brock took third. Rick Rhoden relieved Hough and Luis Melendez hit a grounder to second baseman Davey Lopes who was unable to make a double play, getting only the batter out at first as Brock scored the winning run.

The Dodgers had taken a 3-2 lead in the seventh on singles by Joe Ferguson, Steve Yeager and Lopes. Other Dodger runs came in the fourth and sixth frames on solo homers by Steve Garvey and Jim Wynn. The Cardinals tallied their first run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Mario Guerrero and added the second on Melendez' homer in the sixth. [The Sporting News]
