A ninth-inning triple by rookie pinch-hitter Glenn Adams and clutch relief pitching by rookie lefty Gary Lavelle carried the Giants to a 3-2 victory over the Cubs. After George Mitterwald's solo homer tied the score at 1-1 in the top of the eighth, Dave Rader got a one-out infield hit and Adams broke the tie with a line-shot three-bagger to left. He then scored what proved to be the clinching run on Von Joshua's single.

Lavelle got the final out of the contest after the Cubs scored one run and loaded the bases. Rookie lefty Pete Falcone pitched the first eight innings and picked up his fourth win, yielding just three hits. [The Sporting News]
