A bases-loaded sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Bill Buckner chased home Steve Garvey with the deciding run in the eighth inning as the Dodgers edged the Cubs, 3-2, in the first meeting of the season between the division leaders. L. A. starter Doug Rau drove in the first run of the game with a single in the fifth which scored Tom Paciorek from third. The Dodgers increased the margin to 2-0 in the sixth on a double by Willie Crawford and two-out single by Ron Cey. The Cubs chased Rau in the eighth when Jose Cardenal doubled following singles by Don Kessinger and Manny Trillo.

The Dodgers loaded the bases in the eighth against Darold Knowles when Jim Wynn walked and Garvey and Cey got infield singles. Reliever Oscar Zamora got Joe Ferguson to hit into a force play at the plate before Buckner drove home Garvey with his long fly ball to right. [The Sporting News]
