The Phillies overcame a 7-1 deficit and defeated the Braves, 9-8. Trailing, 8-6, going into the bottom of the ninth, the Phils pulled the game out of the fire with Dave Cash driving home the winning marker. Greg Luzinski and Dick Allen opened the ninth with back-to-back singles and moved up on a passed ball. Phil Niekro relieved Max Leon and Mike Schmidt lined out to third baseman Darrell Evans, who threw wildly trying to double Allen off second, Luzinski scoring. Allen moved to third on a wild pitch.

Mike Anderson struck out, but Bob Boone walked. Ollie Brown hit a single to score Allen and send Terry Harmon, pinch-running for Boone, to second. Cash then delivered a single to win the game.
