Ken Holtzman, who relieved in the fifth inning and faced only one batter, striking out Carl Yastrzemski on three pitches, gained credit for the victory when the Athletics defeated the Red Sox, 9-5. Glenn Abbott, who started for the A's, was staked to a 4-0 lead but blew up in the fifth. The Red Sox loaded the bases and scored one run on a pass to Rick Miller before Rick Burleson cleared the sacks with a double to bring Holtzman to the mound.

Joe Rudi broke the tie with a homer in the A's half of the fifth. Paul Lindblad and Jim Todd finished for the A's, who clinched their victory when Billy Williams homered with two men on base in the seventh inning. [The Sporting News]
