The Phillies jumped on Bob Forsch for four early runs and defeated the Cardinals, 4-1. Their first two tallies counted in the second inning on a walk to Bob Boone, single by Mike Anderson, infield out by Wayne Twitchell and single by Larry Bowa. Two other runs followed in the third when Tommy Hutton walked and Mike Schmidt homered.

Twitchell yielded the Cards' counter in the third on a walk to Bake McBride, a stolen base and single by Ron Fairly. Twitchell's control faltered in the seventh and Tug McGraw came in to retire the last seven straight batters. [The Sporting News]
