A homer by designated hitter Jim Rice in the fifth inning provided the Red Sox with their deciding run in a 7-6 victory over the Indians. The Red Sox got rid of Jim Perry quickly. In the first, a double by Bernie Carbo, single by Carl Yastrzemski, pass to Fred Lynn and double by Rico Petrocelli put three runs on the scoreboard.

Rick Burleson singled in the second and Carbo homered to kayo Perry. The Red Sox added another run in the third. Rice's drive in the fifth then enabled the Red Sox to withstand a rally by the Indians, who scored three of their runs on a homer by John Ellis. [The Sporting News]
