The second smallest crowd in Candlestick Park history -- only 987 -- saw the Padres prevail over the Giants, 3-1. Winner Sonny Siebert didn't allow a hit through five innings, but left after three singles loaded the bases with one out in the sixth. Reliever Dave Tomlin induced Bobby Murcer to hit into an inning-ending double play.

San Francisco did not score until Gary Matthews hit a leadoff homer in the ninth. Bobby Tolan doubled home Enzo Hernandez, who had walked, with the first San Diego run in the opening inning. Johnny Grubb doubled and was singled home by Dave Winfield in the sixth. Hernandez' single, a sacrifice and another single by Hector Torres produced the Padres' final run in the eighth.
