Ted Simmons' three-run homer in the first and Reggie Smith's two-run triple in the eighth backed three-hit hurling by rookie Bob Forsch as the Cardinals remained in a tie with the Pirates in the N.L. East by beating the Expos, 5-1. Simmons rapped his 20th round-tripper after a single by Ted Sizemore and walk to Smith.

Forsch held Montreal hitless through six innings, the Expos finally breaking through for their only tally in the seventh on a double by Mike Jorgensen and single by Ken Singleton. Forsch opened the eighth with a single and Lou Brock reached on an error before Smith swatted his triple. The Expos' only other hit was a two-out single by Willie Davis in the ninth.
