. . . where the 1970s live forever!
The Cardinals left Pittsburgh with a lead of only one-half game in the East Divsion race after losing to the Pirates, 8-6. The Cardinals' relief pitching, which had been magnificent during their drive to first place, finally failed. The Cardinals were leading, 4-3, with one out in the seventh when Manny Sanguillen and Al Oliver singled off Rich Folkers. Al Hrabosky took over and lost his magic against two lefthanded batters. Willie Stargell doubled, driving in two runs. After an intentional pass to Richie Zisk, Richie Hebner came up and smashed a three-run homer.

The Cardinals rallied for two runs in the eighth inning on singles by Reggie Smith and Joe Torre and a double by Ken Reitz. Dave Giusti, making his first appearance since September 7 after being out with back trouble, turned in a tremendous relief performance for the Pirates in the ninth. Lou Brock led off with a single and Ted Sizemore bunted safely. Smith struck out. With Ted Simmons at bat, Brock and Sizemore worked a double steal. Brock's theft was his 111th. Unflustered, Giusti whiffed Simmons and then fanned Torre to end the game. [The Sporting News]
