. . . where the 1970s live forever!
The Cubs jumped on Tug McGraw for two runs in the ninth inning and defeated the Mets, 5-4. The Cubs built up a 3-0 lead against Hank Webb before the Mets tied the score with three runs in the sixth on passes to Ted Martinez and Duffy Dyer, a single by Dave Schneck, sacrifice by Don Hahn and single by Ken Boswell. McGraw, following Bob Apodaca in relief, walked Jim Tyrone to open the ninth.

Andre Thornton bunted and when Dyer threw wildly, Tyrone reached third but Thornton was caught in a rundown between first and second and was retired. After a walk to Ron Dunn, Steve Swisher hit a sacrifice fly for the tie-breaking run and Dave LaRoche followed with a single to drive in what proved to be the winning run. In the Mets' half, LaRoche was lifted after walking Dyer. An infield out by Benny Ayala and single by Hahn produced a run before Oscar Zamora retired the side. [The Sporting News]
