A grand-slam homer by Gorman Thomas and two-run triple by Tim Johnson powered the Brewers to a 9-5 victory over the Red Sox. Thomas hit his homer off Luis Tiant in the first inning after Don Money and George Scott singled and Johnny Briggs walked.

Johnson's triple in the third followed passes to Thomas and Mike Hegan. Pedro Garcia singled to drive in Johnson and later scored himself on a single by Ken Berry. The Red Sox had homers by Fred Lynn and Bob Montgomery. Lynn's blow was the first of his major league career. [The Sporting News]
