Helping himself to victory, Phil Niekro drove in the tie-breaking run with a single when the Braves scored twice in the seventh inning to defeat the Padres, 3-1. Nate Colbert homered for the Padres' run in the third. The Braves tied the score against Joe McIntosh in the sixth when Rowland Office singled and Dusty Baker doubled.

Vic Correll doubled in the seventh and Jack Pierce walked. Niekro followed with his single to drive in Correll. Craig Robinson, running for Pierce, took third on the hit and counted an insurance run on a sacrifice fly by Office. [The Sporting News]
